FOOTBALL/SWEDEN MEET

“I want to experience American culture the best I can.” That’s one of Akron Newstead Rotary’s Swedish exchange student Tor Nuback’s primary goals for his yearlong stay in Akron, NY.

In preparation for his time in the USA, Tor had decided he wanted to play American football since he knew that football was such a large part of sports here, and in American culture in general.

So, Tor became a member of the Akron High School Tigers football team in August starting with preseason practices.  While not knowing what to expect with a physical sport such as football, he did have a similar experience with “hitting” when playing hockey in Sweden.  However, Tor said football was much different with having to learn the plays and terminology.  He also commented that the best part of the season was the camaraderie with his teammates that continues everyday.

Akron head coach Andy Clouse commented, “Things weren’t easy for Tor especially at the beginning, however he worked hard and stayed with it even through difficult challenges. Also, very important was the fact that Tor was an excellent teammate.  This contributed very much to his football experience. Tor played defensive line and special teams, and improved as the season progressed even making some nice plays.”

Coach Clouse was perfect for guiding Tor through his high school football experience since he was familiar with Rotary and our programs due to Andy’s father, Herm Clouse, being a long-time outstanding Rotarian in the Akron Newstead club.

Always willing to embrace new experiences, Tor is considering playing lacrosse in the Spring.  With this and other things, Tor’s encouragement and support has, and will continue to come from his excellent host family Keith and Christina O’Malley, and their children Quinn and Aleece.  Christina, who is a Rotarian and a teacher at Akron Central School, has done a terrific job in leading its Interact Club.
