CANADIAN WARPLANE SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum located in Hamilton has school programs for Grade 6 and Grade 10 students as well as programs for Scouts, Guides and Beavers.  Ancaster Rotary AM Club recently sponsored the Grade 6 classes from Dr Davey School for the day long program at the museum.

A specifically tailored program for the Grade 6 academic program, the museum professional staff created an exciting approach to the Science and Technology curriculum.  The students construct simple devices that start to demonstrate the concept of low pressure and that this low pressure contributes to the principle of lift. Then with a tour of the vintage planes in the museum they are shown how these principles are used in aircraft. With a focus on fun and humour, a series of demonstrations show the concepts of lift, gravity, thrust roll, pitch, yaw and drag.

The children and the teachers had a great time with the hands on learning, touring the various vintage aircraft, and especially having a day away from the classroom.
