SPELLING BEE RESULTS

The Third Annual Ancaster AM Rotary Club’s Spelling Bee was held last Saturday at Mohawk College. Sixty plus elementary students from public and private schools as well as home schooled children within the Hamilton Wentworth Board participated.

The Spelling Bee was established in 2013 to support literacy in youth, a key focus of the Rotary Club of Ancaster AM.  Category 1 takes place in the morning and is open to students in Grades 4-6. Category 2 follows in the afternoon, and is geared to Grade 7-8 students. The students completed for cash prizes for themselves and the for schools they represented.  he competition was keen. In each group over 15 rounds were needed to produce the winners.  
 
The first place winners for Grades 4-6 was Aisha Mahmoud from Fessenden Elementary School.  Aisha’s prize was $400 with an additional $1,000 donated to her school’s literacy programs. Second place was Aakill Ridley, representing Cootes Paradise Elementary School. Aakill award was $200 as well as $500 donated to the School’s literacy programs.
 
There was a tie for third place, Ella Capretta representing Ste Therese of Lisieux and Saihaj Law from Ancaster Meadows Elementary School. Ella and Saihaj both were warded $100.
 
The first place winner for the Grade 7-8 group was India Morrish from Lee Academy. India received $400 as well as $1,000 donated to Lee Academy’s literacy programs. Roland Kim of Norwood Elementary School was second while Taylor Lupton from Westview Middle School was third.
