IT WAS A RAINY DAY OF CARING

On a rainy day in May the Rotary Club of Batavia participated in the United Way Day of Caring, as they have for the last 10+ years.  This year they were assigned to work at the Purple Pony, a private, not for profit that operates in eastern Genesee County.  The Purple Pony provides therapeutic horse back riding to children and adults with special needs.

The organization depends on volunteers to help with operations as well as assisting with the lessons.  The horses are specially trained to be calm and well-mannered so that riders receive the most benefit from the experience.  Not only does this experience provide for overall muscle tone and physical well-being, it helps to develop communication skills, improved self-esteem and confidence in the riders.

This year Purple Pony was seeking help with grooming an outdoor sensory riding trail as well as building a ramp and a shed in which to store sensory equipment.  A team of 12 Rotarians spread mulch on the trail, assembled the ramp and built walls for the shed.  The ramp is a key item for individuals using wheelchairs for mobility, so that they can roll up to the level of the horses, making it easier to mount onto the saddle.  Although they also have an indoor arena, this outdoor trail adds more dimensions to the riding experience for these individuals.

Although it was a rainy day, the team persevered and achieved their goals.  They were all smiles and really displayed “Service Above Self.”  Another example of the Rotary Club of Batavia “Doing good in the world.”
