September is New Generations Month!

The newly chartered Rotaract Club of Buffalo with Governor Karen

Hello Fellow Rotarians of District 7090!

As I travel around the district visiting clubs, I share the decision that  Council on Legislation voted to approve  New Generations as the fifth 5th Avenue of Service in April, 2010.    We now have Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service and New Generations Service to showcase our work in Rotary.

I encourage all clubs to embrace this new avenue of service this year and to designate an active New Generations Champion to tell the story of their club's interactions with our New Generations.

Within our District 7090, our new generations committees under the directorship of Kevin Crouse, include the following as outlined in our District Manual of Procedures and Policies (note Interact age limit lowered by Rotary International).

·                     Early Act : clubs in grades 1 to 8 in community schools

·                     Interact:  Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.

·                     Slapshot: leadership training programs for young people ages 14-18 to promote the development of Interact clubs for youth.

·                     Rotaract:Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they're sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary

·                     Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Committee - leadership training program for youth in the 19-26 age group, promote involvement in Rotaract Clubs, and promote an awareness of the purpose and scope of Rotary International.

·                     Youth Exchange: opportunity to participate in an exchange with other Districts around the world.

According to Rotary International records, our district currently has close to 30 Interact clubs, with 1 more being chartered this coming week.  We, also, have Rotaract and Early Act chartered clubs within our district.  We believe that we have several more Clubs almost ready for formal charter events, and the New Generations leadership would be pleased to assist in any way to address this timely event.  Please check our district directory for a full listing of the various chair persons involved in this important Rotary program.

In closing, I thank you for being a Rotarian in District 7090, and until our paths cross in Rotary work, be safe, my friends.

Karen L. Oakes
