MARCH IS LITERACY MONTH

In Rotary, we recognize March as Literacy Month. This is when we focus on the importance of literacy and education in our humanitarian service.

Since 1905 Rotarians have helped people all over the world in countless number of ways. However, being able to read and write is one of the greatest gifts that Rotary has been able to bestow upon people all over the world through its various literacy programs.

In my years as a Rotarian is several parts of Africa and in North America I have seen again and again what a critical role literacy plays in a healthy and productive life of the people who benefit from Rotary's literacy programs.
Traditionally, literacy is defined as a person's ability to read and write. It should also include functional abilities, like using a computer, understanding how to prevent certain diseases, or reading signs in a market.  Our district is blessed with many different types of literacy programs, both local and international. In an article in this newsletter the District Literacy Chair PDG Jon Olsen writes about the literacy and the resources available to the clubs on literacy. Jon has also written about the literacy awards and I hope many of you will qualify and will apply for one of these awards.

Literacy programs are great ways clubs can start hands on programs where not only Rotarians but members of their family can also become involved. I encourage all clubs to think about literacy projects of every type. Whether it is a project in another country, or in your home town; whether it is a project for children, or adults, or just for mothers and those soon to be mothers; giving people the ability to read and write is to set them free and help them make their own destiny. The gift of literacy is one of the most powerful gifts a Rotary Club can make. Become a Literacy Champion in your club and start a literacy program if your club does not have one.

I have already visited several clubs a second or third time around to participate in Paul Harris Awards and other celebrations. I will do my best to visit as many clubs as I can a second time by June 30, 2010. Sheela and I will be happy to join you at your club event (Fundraising, new member induction, Paul Harris Fellow Award etc.). Please let us know.

Remember, The Future of Rotary is In Your Hands.
