DG Rick’s April Message

MAGAZINE MONTH

April is Magazine Month, obviously referring to the Rotarian magazine. This month in particular we should be encouraging or challenging our fellow Rotarians to read our magazine, the Rotarian. One way of doing this is to hold a trivia session at several or at least one of our weekly meetings in April.

For example:

·         What does ichiban mean in Japanese?

·         What is the third Object of Rotary?

·         Why is plastic not so fantastic?

·         Who is Manny Pacquiao?

·         Who said “Rotary is a love story in which people come together in fellowship, and which results in doing good in the world”?

We should also encourage our Clubs to submit their stories for publication, which the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario did in the April issue. By regularly reading the Rotarian, we keep in touch with Rotary.

PRESIDENTIAL CITATIONS

I’m pleased to announce that 28, or 40% of our District clubs have qualified for a Presidential Citation this year from President Tanaka. These will be presented at the Awards Luncheon at Salvatore’s in Buffalo on June 9, 2013, being held in conjunction with the District Governor Changeover. I encourage you to bring as many members of your Club to this event to share in the recognition. Be sure to register on the District website soon.

We will announce the District Lighthouse Award winners next month.

PEACE THROUGH SERVICE AWARDS

Our District Peace Through Service committee will recognize every reported club Peace Through Service project at the District Awards Luncheon at Salvatore’s in Buffalo on Sunday, June 9, 2013.  The top ten will receive special recognition!

Please complete the “Declare and Share” report on our website and email it before May 24, 2013 to Co-Chair Patti Johnson at pgjphd@gmail.com.

The GOVERNOR’S TROPHY for the “Service Project of the Year” will also be presented.

DISTRICT ASSEMBLY

The training event of the year is happening on Saturday May 4, 2013 at the Niagara Falls NY Convention Center. Marlee Diehl has organized an outstanding program with something for everyone. Bring your entire Board to this event in order to have everyone trained for the coming year. There is even a “Find Your Inner Rotarian” session for newer Rotarians. Be sure to register on the District website so that we get some idea of numbers for each session!

2013 – 2014 DISTRICT GRANT PROGRAM

Congratulations to PDG Karen Oakes and the RI Foundation Committee for an outstanding job in completing next year’s Grant program. A lot of hard work by everyone went into the Plan and it shows. Well done!

2015 – 2016 DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Congratulations to Kevin Crosby on being selected as our District Governor for 2015 – 2016. I know that he will do an outstanding job!

It was great to see 2014 -2015 DG Jack Amico at our last District Council meeting, as he is recovering from open heart surgery. I know that he is eager to get back to Rotary and Service above Self. Don’t rush it Jack!

Keep up the good work that your Club is doing!

HIGH FIVE!
