LOCAL AUTHOR AND ADVOCATE

Michael Jacques is a young author in Fonthill who recently had his second book published for distribution.  This is an incredible feat for many authors but considering that Michael can neither read nor write, it is truly astonishing.   In the past, Michael spoke to the Rotary Club of Fonthill about his first book “Can’t Read, Can’t Write, Here’s my Book”.

Recently, the Rotary Club of Fonthill had a chance to catch up with Michael and hear the story behind his second book – “I Belong, Can I Play?”.   Michael and his father explained that this second book, co-authored by Heather Gale, came about through conversations about what it was like for Michael growing up with autism and an intellectual disability.  The authors capture anecdotes from Michael’s past - including his fascination with string - and through this teach young people about the importance of acceptance, inclusion, diversity and compassion.

Michael writes through speech to text apps on his iPad as well as through conversations with his co-author.  Additionally, he has a team of supporters who assist with his speaking tours (now virtual tours), and promotions.  Michael has been a guest presenter at numerous conferences across the province sharing his lived experience.

Michael is a well-known individual in Fonthill, where he graduated from a local high school, and where he works full time in a local grocery store.  Michael has been recognized locally as citizen of the year, provincially as a member of the Minister’s Advisory Committee on Special Education, nationally in the Globe and Mail newspaper and internationally on the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.

Michael is excited that his first book is now also available in French Je sais pas lire, Je sais pas ecrie, Voici mon livre.

A portion of the proceeds of the sales of Michael’s books goes towards Special Olympics Canada - an organization Michael credits for the support they provided to him over the years.  After Michael’s presentation, our club was pleased to purchase copies of Michael’s books for donation to both branches of our local Pelham libraries.  Books are also available for sale at local PenFinancial branches throughout Niagara and at the Fonthill Sobey’s.

The Rotary Club of Fonthill encourages individuals to check out Michael’s website heresmybook.com to learn more about Michael’s involvement, book him as a guest speaker for your organization or order copies of these great resources for your local library, school or community group.

Michael has been invited by District Governor Frank to be a presenter at the next District Conference scheduled for March 20, 2021 and has accepted.
