FOOD STORAGE PROVIDED

The Rotary Club of Hamilton After Five has provided funding for the purchase of a $2,600 industrial refrigerator for the City Housing Hamilton (CHH) community kitchen located at First Place Hamilton Seniors Residence. Fifty percent of the funding for the industrial refrigerator was provided by the Rotary Club of Hamilton After Five and fifty percent of the funding came from a Rotary International District 7090 Grant. The new industrial refrigerator provides storage for food that is used for food preparation for First Place residents and for the Seniors in the Kitchen (SINKS) program.

In January 2021, CHH and St. Matthews House (a charitable, non-profit multi-service agency) will begin the SINKS (Seniors in the Kitchen) food program. The SINKS program offers weekly workshops in small groups to seniors interested in learning new skills in the kitchen.  The workshops provide an opportunity to build new relationships, new skills, reduce isolation, and provide seniors with the opportunity to engage in cooking nutritious foods that can be shared with family and friends.

CHH has been providing weekly fresh food, dry food and boxed lunches to 85 tenants at First Place. The food is provided by CHH partners: Food for Life, Wesley Urban Ministries and Goodwill Amity Group Hamilton.  As the pandemic ends, a food market will resume each week at First Place.  The food market will be available for all seniors of First Place and empower them to make their own food choices.  The new industrial refrigerator provided by the Rotary Club of Hamilton After Five is key to the storage of fresh and nutritious food items, the SINKS program and the First Place seniors food market.
