LUNCH FOR A CAUSE

The Rotary Club of Hamilton held a virtual fundraiser in October with proceeds supporting Food4Kids. We encouraged members to donate their lunch fee to Rotary for a tax receipt during the month of October.

The Food4Kids organization usually holds its own fundraising breakfast each fall. In the past, the Hamilton Club and its members have sponsored a table(s) and attended the event to support the great work they do. Due to COVID-19, their event has been canceled and the need is even greater. The club wanted to continue to support Food4Kids and help fight hunger. During the month of October donations to the Lunch For A Cause Campaign were given to Food4Kids Hamilton. We are very pleased to send a cheque worth $1350.00 to Food4Kids to help feed children.  No child should go hungry!

HALLOWEEN@HOME

The Rotary Club of Hamilton’s after-school program (COREKids) continues to pivot and adapt to meet the needs of children, youth, and families in the Wever Community. The annual Halloween Spooktacular event needed to be changed. With greater risks and regulations changing trick or treating and Halloween get-togethers needed to be safe. The staff created COREKids Halloween @ Home. Rather than an event, Halloween Kits were created with activities, games and candy…. yes TREATS. The COREKids Halloween @ Home Kits allowed parents to register for the free kits, and have an at-home Halloween event for their children. The kits were porch delivered on Halloween in the afternoon, so families could enjoy some Treats and No Tricks. We had over 30 families participate in the COREKids Halloween @ Home.

REMEMBERING, HONOURING VETS

Remembrance Day on November 11th would be different this year.  To honour those who have and continue to serve our country, the Rotary Club of Hamilton purchased a wreath from The Royal Canadian Legion to be placed at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The National Remembrance Day Ceremony looked a little different this year. With a maximum of 100 participants, the public was discouraged from attending in person but was encouraged to watch on Facebook Live and participate in the Two Minutes of Silence from home.

“Since there are no spectators this year, we are asking the public to help us fill the space around the National War Memorial with 800 wreaths,” says Danny Martin, National Ceremony Director. “The wreaths will act as a visual symbol that Canadians are still thinking of our Veterans and remembering their countless sacrifices. All proceeds will go towards the Legion Poppy Fund in support of Canada’s Veterans and their families.” The Rotary Club Hamilton was proud to support the purchase of a wreath and was part of this visual representation that honours Canada’s Veterans, 75 years after the end of the Second World War.

In addition, the Rotary Club of Hamilton wanted to support the local Poppy Fund. As many Legions rely on Poppy Donations to support Veterans, we knew there would be fewer donations this year. The Rotary Club of Hamilton sent a cheque for $150 to support the Poppy Fund at the Royal Canadian Legion (Barton St) Branch 58.

COVID CAN'T CANCEL CHRISTMAS

The Grinch couldn’t do it and COVID-19 can’t cancel Christmas! The annual Rotary Children’s Christmas Celebration for inner-city children will take place this year. The Rotary Club of Hamilton is pivoting and making plans to continue with their signature event. It will look different this year, but filling tummies and putting smiles on the face of over 500 children will happen in December. Each child will receive a new book, a goodie bag filled with treats, and yes lots of food. We have confirmed Santa will make a special visit. All fundraising will continue online at www.rotaryclubhamilton. Virtual Stockings will help feed 2 children. The event will take place with many safety measures in place on December 17th 2020.
