FREEDOM TO DEFINE

The 2016 Council on Legislation has given clubs the freedom to define new membership types – like corporate members, family members, associate members, etc. Clubs can define the criteria for such memberships as well as the fee structure. Many clubs in our district have already established such “alternative” membership categories… or are contemplating it.

If your club has created one of these special membership types or is considering it, I strongly recommend you have a fee structure that includes paying the RI dues and district dues for each person that joins your club through one of these special categories. By paying RI and district dues for every person included in one of these group memberships, each of them will be recognized as an “Active Rotarian” by RI and counted in the official membership size of your club. They will have all the rights and privileges of any Active Rotarian, including being an officer in your club.

This year, the annual RI dues are only $56 per person and our annual district dues are either $48.33 per person for US clubs or $54.26 per person for Canadian clubs. Your fee structure for special membership categories can include any fee you choose for your club dues, but as long as it includes the dues for RI and our district, each member will be recognized as an Active Rotarian.

Don’t short-change your new members who join under a special group membership category. Make sure they can all share the pride of being part of the most respected service organization in the world.
