What is Rotary?

Most of us are familiar with the concept of the “elevator speech.”  We’ve all been told we should be able to give a succinct 30-second response if someone asks us what Rotary is all about.  This is good advice but I think most of us feel like we really need several minutes to adequately describe Rotary.  After all, there’s local community service projects, international humanitarian projects, polio eradication, fun and fellowship, interesting and informative speakers, youth leadership programs, youth exchange, Peace Scholars, Doing Good in the World through our Rotary Foundation, etc. etc.

If you don’t have a well-memorized 30-second elevator speech about Rotary, I suggest you start by explaining why you joined Rotary and why you are still involved. Make it personal.  Let your enthusiasm and your pride be evident. Hopefully this will lead to a longer, more meaningful conversation.

If you have the opportunity to speak to a group about Rotary, RI has created a PowerPoint presentation that you can adapt to your club or for a multi-club recruitment event. It provides a nice overview of Rotary and a great way to attract potential members who are attending any of your events. You can change the last slide to include information that is specific to your club or clubs.
