WESTFIELD/MAYVILLE SEES IMPACT IN ITS ROTARACTORS

Westfield/Mayville Rotarians are extending an invitation to join them and put into practice a promise some community members may have made long ago. The three words familiar to Rotarians of “Service Above Self”, may describe a pledge community members made but didn’t know how to put it into practice.  And, the Westfield/Mayville club members are ready to tell their neighbors, colleagues and community acquaintances all about Rotary and how to put this possibly forgotten pledge to work for them.

Citing examples for this club necessarily includes the many youth they are heavily involved with in Youth Exchange, Rotaract and Interact. Recently, the W/M club was visited by two members of the Fredonia Rotaract, Amanda Cocchiara and Megan Meszaros, who were introduced by Crystal Schrantz, a past club president, YE counselor and club Rotaract representative. Each student described the value of Rotaract involvement and demonstrated their own Service Above Self.

A State University of New York at Fredonia senior and Rotaract president, Amanda majors in Psychology and Criminal Justice and minors in Sociology. She plans to attend graduate school for Clinical Psychology with concentrations in adolescents and trauma with the aspiration of becoming an adolescent psychologist. Having traveled to three African countries to aid disadvantaged communities, her future echoes Service Above Self.   “My biggest passion in life is helping others and to ultimately make a positive impact on those around me,” Amanda said. “In order to do so, I believe it is imperative to take full advantage of all opportunities as they come.  I also have begun a job working with developmentally disabled criminals in a forensic setting. “I am an avid member of Fredonia’s cross country and track teams, as well as a new member of Toastmasters and a long-time (four years) member of Rotaract,” she said proudly.

Majoring in Business Marketing, Megan, a junior, became involved in Rotaract when a few of her friends had asked her to go to a meeting with them. As it so happened, she noted, “I had not intended on it leading to my position as vice president and being so thoroughly active in the club and the community.  Rotaract has not only helped me grow as a person, but it helped me realize a path I would like to take after college. My post-college plans are still not completely clear to me as a junior, but I plan to pursue my goals as a business woman, and I am excited to see where this road takes. Amanda is determined to live up to her future plans. “Being a part of Rotaract has played a monumental role in my growth throughout my college years,” she said. “Without it I don’t think I would be where I am today!”
