A SURPRISE RECOGNITION

At the 100th Anniversary Black Bridge Celebration dinner on Saturday, August 12, 2016, Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise's Past President Sue O'Dwyer surprised club member Andy (Rusty) Kooistra with a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition. Besides being a committed RCNS Rotarian who chairs committees, actively supports fundraising events, and is not shy about becoming involved in "sweat equity" projects, Andy spearheaded a massive project in Waterford, a Norfolk County community.  Pictured are Sue and Rusty.

He had a vision to revive the derelict rail line running into Waterford and turning it into usable hiking and cycling trails to benefit locals and bring people to Waterford. In four years, a staircase was installed to join the upper and lower levels of the trail, spur lines and main lines cleared, grated and paved, trees planted, numerous clean-ups held, a bridge found and installed, a boardwalk and docks installed, and the list goes on. The transformation has left many in awe.

The club thanks Andy for his incredible foresight and guidance; the impact of his leadership that will have a positive social and economic impact on Waterford for years to come.
