GOVERNORS CARRYING & PASSING THE TORCH

On Saturday June 17, 2022, Rotarians from District 7090 gathered together at the historic Battle of Beaverdams Park, in Thororld, Ontario.  The setting could not have been better for this historic day for Rotary District 7090.  The sun was out, summer felt like it was in full swing, and the people gathered waited in anticipation for the burning torch to arrive.  You see, not only was there a ceremonial torch being carried throughout the Province to celebrate the Canada Summer Games, but there was a metaphorical passing of the torch from one Governor to another, as we end one Rotary year and begin another.  And when soon to be PDG Anne crossed the finish line with soon to be Governor Lisa Bishop by her side, it symbolized the seamless transition of our DG Chain in District 7090, and in the process making a little history of our own.

With friends and family joining the occasion, along with RI Director and Vice President, Valerie Wafer, soon to be Past DG Anne graciously thanked all those who helped make her year a success, before handing over the gavel to our incoming Governor Lisa.  Lisa spoke to the crowd, thanking all those who made her Rotary journey possible, especially noting our recently passed PDG Karen Oakes as her inspiration in her new leadership role.  Lisa reminded us about this year’s theme of Imagine Rotary, and all the things that are possible with Rotary.

A good time was had by all in attendance, as we continue to get back to normal Rotary events after the Pandemic. For those who could not make it to the in person ceremony, a virtual DG Changeover celebration, a couple of nights later.  Those in attendance shared in with a variety of toasts, thank yous and picture montage of all the things Rotarians in our District have been doing over the last year.  It was an honor to be part of these events in a small way.  As I helped read the list of all the accomplishments of the clubs during the past year, it reminded me of the so many ways that we Rotarians are making huge impacts in our communities each and every day.

As the new Governor Elect, I am excited for the opportunity to see more and more about what Rotary is doing and for all the opportunities that exist for all of us.  So welcome to the new Rotary year.  Together, let’s Imagine all the ways we will make a difference in the lives of all those we touch, as we continue to live each day by our motto of Service Above Self.
